It was invented by a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd who was raised by her father and thought that they should be celebrated just as much as mothers. Her father was born in June so she chose to hold the first fathers day on June 19th of 1910. June 19Juneteenth - also known as Emancipation Day, is the oldest known holiday celebrating the end of slavery. It started on June 19, 1865 when the Union soldiers, led by General Granger, came to Galveston Texas and announced that the Civil War was over and the slaves were free. General Granger read the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing approximately 250,000 slaves in the state of Texas. Texas and Oklahoma are the only two states in the United States that have made Juneteenth a legal holiday. Y.A.R.D.'s 2008 Safe Summer Beach Program, for teens age 12-18, to get together and socialize in a drug and alcohol free youth area. Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday night from 8pm-11pm through August 31st. There will be music, sports, contests, ice cream, special events, bands and more! Run by Youth Advocacy Resource Development, a collaborative effort by NYS, Suffolk County, Southampton and East Hampton Towns, Sag Harbor Village, North Haven Village, and the Sag Harbor School District.
