Honoring John Steinbeck
The Sag Harbor Historical Museum will set up on Long Wharf during HarborFest this year to honor the great American author John Steinbeck, who lived in Sag Harbor during his later years and was one of the founders of the Old Whalers Festival, a precursor to HarborFest. This was a particularly important year for Steinbeck’s legacy in Sag Harbor, with the Sag Harbor Partnership working with Southampton Town, Sag Harbor Village and other groups to preserve the author’s former home on a peninsula on Bluff Point, where he finished work on two of his most notable books, “Travels With Charlie” and “The Winter of Our Discontent.”

Cruising with American Beauty
American Beauty Cruises & Charters began ticketed sightseeing boat tours and private charters in 1992. Docked on Long Wharf, American Beauty II is described in one review as “Quintessential Sag Harbor” and is one of the few US Coast Guard inspected vessels in the area, with approval to accommodate up to 33 guests. For HarborFest, American Beauty is offering a 90-minute nature cruise, a narrated boat ride that includes Barcelona Point, Cedar Point Lighthouse and the Mashomack Nature Preserve. The two-hour sunset cruise departs at 5:30 p.m. Advance tickets are available at americanbeautycruises.com.

Whaleboat Races
HarborFest’s signature event presented by The Sag Harbor Express off Windmill Beach, where annual bragging rights and the coveted Whalers Cups are on the line. The races had their origins in the Old Whalers Festival, which began in 1964 as an effort to drum up tourism during the shoulder season. Races begin at noon on Saturday and 11:30 a.m. on Sunday and run throughout the afternoon. Men’s, Women’s, and Firefighter divisions will compete.

Fun for Kids
Long Wharf will be teeming with fun kids’ activities, with bounce castles, games, competitions, amusements and so much more. Just off the wharf on Windmill Beach will be tug-of-wars, hula hoop contests and the annual corn shucking contest, all presented by Epic Martial Arts. Face painting and tattoos for kids are new to this year’s festival. Also, stop by The Wharf Shop on Main Street and enter to win the newly-released Sag Harbor jigsaw puzzle.

Live Music on Long Wharf
This year’s festival will feature live music across town with musicians taking to Long Wharf and Steinbeck Park throughout the day on both Saturday and Sunday, including long-time favorites like the Sag Harbor Community Band and Alfredo Merat, along with new names like The Popsicles and Jettykoon. Saturday night of the festival wraps up with a 5 p.m. performance by Gene Casey and The Lone Sharks and a 7:30 p.m. show with the HooDoo Loungers, both in Steinbeck Park.

Clam Chowder Contest
The can’t-miss event of the festival is the famous HarborFest Clam Chowder Contest, which begins at noon on Sunday. Sample chowders from local restaurants and take home a 2023 commemorative HarborFest mug! The event costs $20 to participate and will benefit the Sag Harbor Chamber of Commerce.
