We recognize and honor film and filmmakers who deserve a closer look. We bring the work of talented documentary filmmakers with preference from New York to Montauk, Long Island—to new audiences with our annual December film festival in Sag Harbor and year round screenings in the Hamptons.

Our History

Community response assures us of a preference and appreciation for quality documentary films. We are known as the ‘art house’ festival presenting 4 days of emerging premieres and award-winning documentaries, shorts, features, and student submissions. These fill our “all docs all day” mission coupled with insightful and stimulating Q/A discussions.

We Celebrate

Our special Galas honor legendary documentary filmmakers and have included luminaries such as Richard Leacock, the master of direct cinema; Susan Lacy, the creator of WNET/PBS American Masters currently at HBO; the dynamic and pioneering documentary team of D A Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus; and for 2014 we celebrated Barbara Kopple and her 40+year career of Academy-award winning films. Our Filmmaker’s Choice Award is a peer selection to honor one of its own esteemed documentarians. The 2014 choice was Wendy Keys and her acclaimed documentary career as administrator/programmer at the Film Society of Lincoln Center from 1966-2008.

Year Round

We screen important films during the Spring and Fall; we launched a year-round Library Outreach program providing festival films to East End libraries to screen for members; we offer  student workshops taught by acclaimed documentary filmmakers to inspire young filmmakers in the art & mechanics of the documentary; we partner with organizations and institutions to augment their programs with documentary film.

Advisory Board

The Hamptons Take 2 Documentary Film Festival created a prestigious Advisory Board, a group of film/media/communications professionals who care about the documentary genre and are generous with creative ideas. Together we gather, pollinate ideas and put them into practice for a growing and important documentary film festival.

As we always say, a good story can make a good documentary and a good story told with talent and heart makes a doc you’ll talk about after the theatre lights come up. Thank you for your continuing support.
